We have had many days where the expectations were totally different from the reality, but this day really exemplified this. We counted on a very easy day. We only had 19 miles to get to Fredericksburg and while we knew we had to climb the steep 3 1/2 miles out of the Enchanted Rock Valley, we still counted it as a rest day. Our first step to exhaustion was a really long hike. We hiked a trail up Enchanted Rock and the trail that encircled the entire batholith. We neglected to bring water, and the hike was a strenuous 5 1/2 miles, so we were probably already dehydrated before we got on the bicycles. The 3 1/2 miles straight up out of the canyon was grueling-it took over 40 minutes! What we didn’t anticipate were huge steep hills all the way to Fredericksburg, as well as a slight headwind. We also were misdirected, which increased our mileage to 22 and also took us up a long hill to enter Fredericksburg from the north side. We were totally spent... There are no easy days! We soon recouped after a dip in the hotel hot tub and enjoyed a nice dinner in town at the local favorite Otto’s. We got our second resupply box sent courtesy of Jenny O’Bryan and restocked our food supply for the next couple of weeks. Total cycling mileage: 22 Total hiking mileage: 9
